ODF / EUROPEAN ODF 12.18.16 GLOBAL CONVERSATION (based on EODF's December Newsletter) 00:25:57 Organization Design Forum: I see the theme for December as Agile 00:29:51 Michelle Pallas: Are there recommendations about which archtype to use in different industries? 00:31:32 Craig McGee: I don’t think it’s the industry that dictates the archetype, but the culture and leadership in a particular organization. 00:31:34 Dawn Newman: It certainly is not a linear process from my experience 00:35:15 Dawn Newman: I've had success in implementing lateral integration teams/network/communities that have proven a powerful element of design....particularly in complex organizations where integration and communication improvements are needed 00:37:55 Craig McGee: Strongly agree, Dawn!!! 00:38:03 Organization Design Forum: It always has politic’s, as Craig says, Messy! So often we also do structure last or second to last in the design process. 00:38:44 Craig McGee: My associate has some strong feelings about that as well ;) My 4 legged associate ;) 00:40:41 Dawn Newman: I'm also finding it not as commonplace for organizations to focus on strategy and future state prior to going into the design. In other words, people are so much in the daily execution, responding to pop ups that they aren't practicing envisioning what could be. Building capacity to think strategically is where we can add value even if they aren't following a complete design process 00:41:34 Dawn Newman: Jill's point on scenarios is a great way to help people wonder about different ways the future could be. 00:41:42 Craig McGee: We’ve really tried to charter the design team for options!!! Yes, takes the DT out of the position of having to “second guess” the leaders 00:42:40 Craig McGee: We’ve had leaders that say that the role of the DT is to “help align us”…..through their thinking and dialogue 00:46:04 Dawn Newman: Michelle, thanks for sharing you have scars. I've learned from failure. too. 00:46:07 Organization Design Forum: Im So with Michelle, if you aren’t clear on Strategy, - my experience is that design doesn’t work with out strategy - and design often prompts refining/fine tuning strategy 00:47:51 Organization Design Forum: Yes, I have lots of scars, and they have been the best learnings! 00:48:46 Organization Design Forum: The design team/agile nexus, is really interesting for our community. 00:50:47 Dawn Newman: Did they discuss in the article the capabilities/skills/mindset of agile? I see "being agile" as a way to survive. 00:50:59 Craig McGee: Good point,, Bill. I think the culture is a strong determinant of what kind of design methodology and tools you can use. 00:51:39 Craig McGee: Agree with Dawn…..we don’t “do” agile, we create agility. 00:52:52 Craig McGee: I see a lot of strong silos in University settings. And I think there is a lot of competition for resources - grants, money, etd 00:59:19 Jill Windelspecht: Yes, I think power struggles are the main enemy of agile and creating change 00:59:24 Organization Design Forum: Older Babyboomer are more resistant to agile/holocracy in my experience - it requires lots of hand holding 01:02:25 Dawn Newman: At the heart of collaboration is trust. I can also see reward/development as a reinforcer of collaboration. 01:02:35 Organization Design Forum: Generalizations don’t always work - so your point Jeroen - is that you do find boomers who are ready for agile and want it…. 01:03:38 Organization Design Forum: Zappos is the largest organization that Holocracy has been deployed. We haven’t learned to scale in Large bueracratignorganizations 01:11:56 Craig McGee: Thanks again, Jeroen!!! And Bill!!!
