2017 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
SHIFTING ORGANIZATION ECOSYSTEMS – DESIGNING FOR BALANCE
April 25 – 27, 2017
Santa Fe, NM
Santa Fe, NM
As Organization Designers, we experience extreme pressure to provide quick fixes to complex challenges. We know that organizations form complex ecosystems with intricate patterns. Our organizations operate in a disruptive, fast shifting and digital world. We focus on designing solutions that create positive shifts in those patterns. Sometimes those shifts produce unintended, unexpected consequences in structure and culture. Those consequences give rise to new leadership challenges. We must be ready to respond and continue to adjust. We must create a harmonious balance among social, technical, market, and community systems.
At 2017 ODF, we will present a wide range of topics and techniques for engaging with complex patterns. You will explore and interact with people who bring different experiences, such as:
- Organization design experts who share wisdom and guidance for finding the balance and simplicity
- Business executives who have experimented with different organization designs
- Authors of books, articles, research, and digital alternatives like blogs and vlogs
- Scholars who study organizations and bring ideas from the latest research
- Consultants who develop unique thinking and practices to match the needs of their clients
- Learners exploring the nature of organization design for the first time
Join us in this exciting exploration and discovery!

PLENARY SPEAKERS

Activating the Enterprise Strategy
at W.L. Gore: Lessons Learned
featuring
MARY TILLEY & AMY KATES
at W.L. Gore: Lessons Learned
W.L. Gore’s updated Enterprise Strategy creates a unified direction for the company and its divisions. However, moving from small business unit silos to an integrated, closely held portfolio requires significant shifts in accountabilities and ways of work. Gore’s powerful, but informal, management culture has worked for 30 years, but the business environment now demands greater speed and agility. Gore’s leadership realized the organization was not architected in a scalable way and many long term practices would not serve it in the future. Leveraging the tried and true Star Model, with a focus on the organizational capabilities and activation, has allowed the company to identify the right organizational changes and accelerate the pace of change. In this session, Mary Tilley will share the organization design frameworks that Gore is using to prepare this iconic company for continued success.

The Changing Practice
of Organization Design
in a
Networked Multi-Stakeholder World
featuring
SUE MOHRMAN & STU WINBY
of Organization Design
in a
Networked Multi-Stakeholder World
Today’s environment demands Increasing the scope of the focus of organization design and considering the value delivered to a much broader set of stakeholders. We will explore case studies that demonstrate the role of the designer in this changing environment. We will explore changing frameworks for designing in a world characterized by digital advances that enable connectivity on a scale that fundamentally changes the business models in many industries. This is combined with an unprecedented demand for collaboration across many dimensions and stakeholders in order to deal with a world of scarce resources. The argument is that deep expertise in organization, multi-stakeholder, and inter-organizational design is required to deal with these challenges.

How Would One Design Relationships
to Fit the Needs of
Different Kinds of Situations?
featuring
DR. EDGAR SCHEIN & PETER SCHEIN
to Fit the Needs of
Different Kinds of Situations?
We are increasingly entering the age of relationships, yet we continue to ignore what we really mean by relationships, that relationships exist at different levels from pure transaction to emotional intimacy, and there is nothing much written about how one would design relationships to fit their needs of different kinds of situations. In this session Dr. Schein wants to explore what it would mean to design the links between the organizational units or roles that are typically the target of design efforts. What kind of relationships do we want between people and between groups, and how would we design such relationships?
He will be referring to two of his most recent books, Humble Consulting (2016) and Organizational Culture and Leadership, 5th Edition (2017)

“Designers’ Practice”
(with real-time exploration and consulting)
featuring
SUSIE MACLEAN & WENDY BOWERS
Working in small groups, conference attendees will tackle the strategic organization design issues of scaling for growth. The case involves The Solutions Group, which was a small, local, and successful Wellness and EAP provider, when purchased in 2013 by Presbyterian Healthcare Services, the largest integrated health care system in New Mexico. In the past three years revenue and headcount have tripled, and while connections with the parent company are in place, operating methods remain largely independent. As a local company, within a larger local company (with for-profit and not-for-profit divisions), future growth will come from outside the home market. Guided by a session flow planned by Wendy, we’ll be asked to weigh in on the organization capabilities, design, and alignment factors Susie will need to consider as she prepares to expand the division beyond its home state.

What we heard after our 2016 conference . . .
Thoroughly enjoyed the conference, and the speakers and topics. I liked the smaller number of participants and the ability to interact with the presenters.
Had a fantastic time! The networking, sense of community, and commitment to learning and sharing are the strongest of any conference I’ve ever attended. I feel privileged to be a part of this network. Thank you!
Very well done — it’s one of those experiences I’ve had where I think afterwards — “how could I NOT have done that???” And those are the best…
