A New Old Org Design Approach:
Capabilities + Adaptive Leadership + AI
The rapid development and adoption of AI technologies is hugely relevant to the ODF community. As professionals designing human systems, our members are very keen to explore and further understand the space where humans and technology meet. We sought a volunteer from our members who would be willing to share their experience in this piece of the Org Design puzzle and we are excited to be partnering with one of our active participants who raised his hand, Jim Dowling.
What does Jim intend to share . . .
I have three emerging HR Executives who have sponsored their teams to work with me to bring AI into the field of vision of their companies to three levels of leadership.
So far they have applied off the shelf AI tools to:
- Use AI as a recorder, commentator, and communication content source in design conversations
- Share SMEs across design teams using them to teach Domain Language Models
- Capture and connect pre-made decisions to leader decisions
- Capture and provide access to policies, decision principles, and regulatory requirements
- Applied the Gemini Generative AI Agent to examine a list of L&D challenges and suggest proactive measures they might take
- Compared their practices of leadership development to those professed by Zenger-Folkman and The RBL Group
- Examined and decided to experiment with Dynamic Directed Self-Organizing Teams
Along the way they have:
- Connected the dots among human-centered organization design principles
- Coached execs to make it possible to connect the dots among Purpose, Values, Vision, Mission, Goals, Policies…
- Taken internal leader’s use of some form of AI at least twice a week from less than 1% to more than 40%
Jim will provide a tour of the origins of the concepts and principles these teams are experiementing with and implementing.
A suggested pre-read – Tour the Framework for Adaptive Leaders, Leadership, and Organizations
From Jim: We designed our organization design practices and priinciples based on a framework of information whose content is different for every organization but the framework has never failed to serve close to a dozen independent consultants for more than five years. Explore the framework beforehand to expand opportunities to ask ‘how and why questions’ as I present the ‘what’.
