A term used to describe design for system optimization [the social and technical] as opposed to maximizing one aspect at the expense of the other. The goal is mutual enhancement of the social and technical aspects of a work system. Frequently in today’s digital world, this same concept is referred to as augmentation. The individual should be viewed as complementary to the machine rather than as an extension of it and the machine a complementary component to the human, not a replacement for them. (See also Augmentation)
