Internal Organization Design at Saudi Aramco:
The experiences of a large and long-standing team
inside a multi-national energy powerhouse

Aramco is one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemicals companies, active in the exploration, production, refinement and sale of oil and gas, related petrochemicals, and the development of new energies. Majority state-owned, Aramco has operations in 20+ countries, with 100+ facilities, and the company employs over 75,000 people according to its Annual Report 2024. Their 100+ strong internal OD team has been operating continuously since the 1960s.

Join us for a fascinating conversation with Adam Tarpey, a senior advisor in the team. Adam will take us on a journey of the team’s history, before describing its current setup, work focus, and terms of engagement with the business, drawing on real work examples to bring it all to life. We’ll delve into the characteristics that have enabled the team to thrive and succeed, and how they intend to evolve their practice to keep pace with changing needs. Expect an open discussion about the day-to-day joys and challenges of advising from within.

This session is the second installment of ODF’s ‘Behind the Curtain’ series that focuses solely on internal OD functions. These events provide a unique and privileged window into individual companies’ internal OD practices: what they do; how they operate; where they see their future heading. While there will be opportunities for Q&A, the main emphasis will be on hearing presenters’ unique stories and experiences—akin to listening in on a fireside chat.

Adam Tarpey has been supporting organizations with operating model and organization design change for nearly 10+ years, initially as an external management consultant with Deloitte and Gate One in the U.K., and more recently as part of Saudi Aramco’s internal Organization Design practice in Saudi Arabia. His work has covered everything from complex large-scale operating model change to detailed team-level organization, role, governance and process design, and he has experience of building OD capability; both as an external consultant and internally within Saudi Aramco.

Marcia Murphy, the session facilitator, is an independent consultant specializing in operating model and work system design. Based in the United Kingdom, she works internationally with organizations across a wide range of industries, from PE-backed rapid growth businesses to large multinationals.  Her experience spans both external consultancy and senior in-house roles, including establishing and leading a new global Organization Design, Development and Change team at British Airways. Marcia is a member of the ODF Board and will host the discussion with Adam.
